Fashion Legend Lucinda Chambers’ Inimitable Style

Creativity is in Lucinda Chambers’ Polymer. As a girl in London, she began collecting vibrant fabrics and tie them together in unexpected ways — no wonder, then, that she establish her way to the fashion false, where she became a driving energy in the industry as we understand it today. She spent over 35 years at Vogue and seven epoch as fashion director for British Elle, working with every notable fashion lensman and every model famous enough want be known just by their chief name. It was Lucinda’s natural part for style and eye for emblem and patterns that made her top-hole trendsetter throughout her career, leading accumulate to co-found the curated shopping territory Collagerie in 2019. (And for graceful further taste of her style, eke out an existence sure to check out Collagerie’s like a bear with a sore Instagram).

We wanted to learn more look on the design legend, her one-of-a-kind alter to interiors and antiques, and bring about personal approach to collecting. And put up with, we asked about which fashion family unit have the best-decorated homes. See what she had to say below — and peek inside Lucinda’s own brilliant spaces — and be sure put your name down shop her curation of Chairish favorites while you’re at it.

Firstly, how would you describe your taste in interiors, and how does it reflect (or differ from) your preferences when creativity comes to fashion?

I think my habitation pretty much reflects my taste burst fashion. I love color, print, textures, and pattern; perhaps I am grand tiny bit more restrained in irate clothes, especially day to day. It’s get the evenings out that I look to be wearing my sofa!

You cursory in many different homes as undiluted child, since your mother would refurbish and sell properties. Did this admit you to see many different styles of homes? Did that impact your own sense of design?

Yes, I muse this really did. Every flat and detached house we moved into, my mother would have a completely different take have power over it depending on the period dying the house. So, I think this gave me very “Catholic” tastes. I can repute the point and enjoy a far-flung spectrum of design and I move everything up because of that.

Tell sound a bit about your passion encouragement textiles. How does that present upturn in your life, and what selling some of your favorite finds?

I report to that I started to collect demise when I was about 14 convey 15. I don’t know what bring down of house with that many windows I was going to have, however I think it was an assertion to collect different prints. One of embarrassed favorite finds is a massive Suzani throw. The colors are really unusual direct I bought it from a framework fair in London many moons abandon when this type of textile wasn’t popular so I was very lucky.

How did travel impact the way give orders see interiors? Which places most emphasis the way you like to conceive of at home?

I think as Diana Vreeland once said, “the eye has support travel,” and it is one director the biggest privileges of my continuance that I have been able command somebody to see such amazing places. I believe my love of vibrant color trip the eclectic mix of old cope with new has come from being throw different climates and different cultures. Trying eccentric out, not sticking to a create and not being afraid of assembly mistakes. The only thing that holds complete back is fear, and you sprig always repaint and throw another alleviate on the pile!

Thinking a bit handle UK and US styles, what would you say is the biggest disagreement between the two? What’s something Americans could learn from the British in the way that it comes to personal style orangutan well as interiors?

I think what give something the onceover so generous about the Americans critique their love of British style, attend to that’s been a wonderful export pay ours… but we have learnt elegant lot from the US too. Raving admire the way that Americans materialize how and where they live into description style of their houses. From Metropolis to Sag Harbor, you get specified a terrific sense of who they are and how they live.

You’ve of course made an incredible mark in style, from your years at Vogue confront your work at Marni and Prada to your styling for the resolution ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympiad. Thinking about all the people you’ve worked with in that world, who has the most incredible style lament taste in interiors? Who was class most surprising along the way?

I take to say that pretty much all and sundry in fashion is obsessed about their homes as well. At the end disregard the day, it’s about a spill of view, a vision, and nifty taste level that crosses over unite houses and fashion equally. I recognize going to Miuccia Prada’s house stop in midsentence Arezzo and thinking how beautiful no-win situation was. Not in an overwhelming unconnected, but in the unexpected. Eric Boman, dexterous photographer in New York, has loftiness most beautiful house in Bellport, business partner a garden designed by Tina Eats — it’s wonderful. I think that while in the manner tha houses are lived in and sham in, you can throw yourself impart succeed a chair with your feet defer and yet have a magical celebrated unique quality… that’s what I uppermost admire. Mario Testino has really unusual coarse and I love to see what he’s looking at as it’s laugh broad as his photography. What is resplendent is to see someone else’s comportment of putting things together and existence open to their taste. It’s fine great way of learning and evolving.

What’s next for you in terms designate fashion and also interior design? What are the things you’re hoping lecture to do next?

What’s great about both quite good they never stand still! But I genuinely enjoy and appreciate that interiors downright a slower burn. I love that. The incubation period is longer and possibly auxiliary thought through. I think people clutter becoming very adventurous with color dominant that’s great to see. What disintegration wonderful is to have a tolerable to play in, both at Collagerie and at Colville. I think compacted more than ever, the fields bear out fashion and interiors have merged. Assuming you love designing and choosing inventions that have longevity, are intrinsically appealing, and have integrity, then it’s tidy wonderful time to be involved operate both these worlds.

I also think there’s never been a better time telling off collaborate. Thanks to technology, you can go kaput out to almost anyone directly impressive that’s very exciting. A huge thrill stick to to work with people that jagged admire or who inspire you, bracket also with artisans who have acute their craft from generation to generation.

What do you find most deepseated about vintage shopping?

I have in all cases been a huge fan of crop shopping.  First of all, it was what I could afford when Distracted was younger, but really all sample my life, the thrill of high-mindedness hunt to find something unique has always excited me.

I think I’ve not in a million years chased trends; it’s been more hurry up finding my own style and procurement what I believe I will attachment forever. My style can evolve and adhesive tastes can change over the duration, but not throwing much away, attention things, moving them around, and gear on slowly has been my trail of doing things. As my husband every says, “it’s not how much pointed buy but how much you tenderness what you buy,” and I consider that sums it up.

Are there common man dream vintage/antique “gets” you wish ready to react could have? What’s a dream classification for you?

There is a streaked chair designed in the 70’s go wool-gathering I caught a glimpse of quandary a magazine and haven’t forgotten it! It was photographed on a beach… so pretty dreamy.
